About Whale Sharks

Whale sharks, also known locally as butanding, are the largest fishes in the sea, can grow up to  12 meters or more. It has a blunt snout above its huge mouth as well as barbels on each nostril. Its back is brown with white spots all over while its sides are grey to its white belly. They are also carnivorous filter feeders, only feeding on plankton and small fishes through a mechanism called cross flow filtration. Whale sharks prefer warm, tropical waters, being abundant in places such as Australia. They are docile creatures, allowing swimmers to tag along. They are currently vulnerable, due to still being hunted in areas such as the Philippines.
